This was a true apocalypse, and for much of the running time, you get the sensation that none of your favorite characters would escape from this alive.

We never fully get an explanation but gee is that a tantalizing question. This pre-Weirdmageddon triumph had Dipper and Mabel planning for their 13th birthday party/going away bash (since it would happen at the end of summer, right before they head home) and Dipper investigating the extraterrestrial origins of Gravity Falls. It's not that I wasn't anticipating their intelligence, but I don't think I was anticipating the scope of their passion. "I honestly thought it would go over kids' heads. The creator was of the view that kids would not connect with Gravity Falls. I will be their fan now, if that's any kind of consolation." So as long as they're making it, I will be seeing it, and I will be appreciating it. He said, "I'm so grateful for the fan community that does exist. Because a pilot you have to convince people to love you, and a finale you have to convince them to love you while taking something away from them - which is basically impossible."
